Epoxy Coverage: How Many m² Does 1 kg Cover?

Short answer: How many m² 1 kg of epoxy covers depends on the product, the coat thickness and the floor. In a thin coat such as a primer or topcoat (data-sheet consumption 0.350–0.500 kg/m² per coat), 1 kg covers ≈2.0–2.9 m²; a self-leveling epoxy that uses 1.6 kg/m² per 1 mm covers ≈0.6 m² at 1 mm and ≈0.3 m² at 2 mm. For thick coatings, consumption is the mixed density multiplied by the thickness in mm; the order quantity is area × consumption plus a waste allowance.

The consumption and density values in this guide come from the technical data sheets of DEMCO floor coating products. Values marked "≈" are calculated from those data-sheet values and do not include waste.

Why is there no single answer?

"Epoxy" is not the name of a single product. Primers, intermediate coats, self-leveling coatings and topcoats are applied at different thicknesses. In a thin coat measured in microns, 1 kg spreads over several square meters; in a coating measured in millimeters, it does not even cover one square meter. Three factors set the consumption:

  • Product type: each product has its own mixed density and its own per-coat consumption in the data sheet.
  • Coat thickness: if the thickness doubles, the amount of material doubles too.
  • Surface: the absorbency and roughness of the concrete and any added quartz change the actual consumption.

The formula for thick coatings: density × thickness

For self-leveling and filled thick coatings, consumption can be calculated from the mixed density in the data sheet:

Consumption (kg/m²) = mixed density (g/cm³) × thickness (mm)

Material spread over 1 m² at a thickness of 1 mm has a volume of 1 liter, and a density in g/cm³ is the same number in kg/L. So the weight per m² of a 1 mm layer equals the density.

Example: the mixed density of DEMCO EPOX 2004 SELF/FAST is 1.60 ± 0.10 g/cm³. For 1 mm, 1.60 × 1 ≈ 1.6 kg/m²; the data sheet likewise states that a single application at 1.600 kg/m² gives a 1 mm dry film. For 2 mm, 1.60 × 2 ≈ 3.2 kg/m² is needed; at this thickness 1 kg covers 1 ÷ 3.2 ≈ 0.3 m².

Because the density is given with a tolerance, the formula is an estimate. If the data sheet gives a consumption for a thickness, use that value for ordering: for DEMCO EPOX 2000 SELF the density is 1.65 ± 0.10 g/cm³ and the data-sheet consumption is 1.6 kg/m² per 1 mm; the calculation is based on that consumption.

Per-coat consumption of primers, intermediate coats and topcoats

The thickness of thin coats is measured in microns (1 mm = 1000 µm), and the data sheets give their consumption directly per coat in kg/m² or g/m² (400 g/m² = 0.400 kg/m²).

The last column is calculated as 1 ÷ the data-sheet consumption; waste, absorbency and added quartz are not included. For total kg/m² per system, see What determines floor coating cost per m²?, and browse all our flooring products.

The formula can also be used as a check on thin coats: DEMCO EPOX 115 PR has a density of 1.08 ± 0.10 g/cm³; for 370 µm (0.37 mm), 1.08 × 0.37 ≈ 0.4 kg/m², which matches the 400 g/m² in the data sheet.

For impregnation primers, however, use the range in the data sheet. DEMCO EPOX 100 PR penetrates the capillary pores of the concrete, so its consumption depends on how absorbent the concrete is. The data sheet of DEMCO EPOX 118 PR also states that consumption may vary with the absorbency of the surface. For moisture-barrier primers (DEMCO EPOX 110 PR, DEMCO EPOX 112 PR, DEMCO EPOX 114 PR – FAST) the data sheets give no figure and state only that consumption depends on the surface. For damp concrete, see the concrete moisture guide.

Total consumption is the per-coat value multiplied by the number of coats. For example, two coats of DEMCO EPOX 150 TOP COAT come to 2 × 350–400 g/m² ≈ 0.7–0.8 kg/m².

How do surface, roughness and quartz change consumption?

Data-sheet consumptions apply to a prepared surface; some data sheets state explicitly that these values are theoretical.

  • Absorbency: porous concrete soaks up primer. The data sheets give no numerical correction for this; the amount of primer is determined by inspecting the floor.
  • Roughness: the DEMCO PUR 303 CONCRETE SL 20 UB/WB data sheet states that the values may vary with waste and surface roughness, and the DEMCO PUR 303 CONCRETE SL31 COVING/WB data sheet also links primer consumption to roughness. The data sheets require cracks and holes to be repaired with epoxy paste beforehand; holes that are not repaired fill up with coating material.
  • Quartz: quartz can be added to DEMCO EPOX 2000 SELF as component C if required, and DEMCO EPOX 115 PR can also be applied as a 1:1 mix with quartz. Data-sheet consumptions refer to the product itself; no kg/m² is given for quartz-filled mixes, so have the resin and quartz quantities calculated separately. Broadcast quartz is a separate item as well; according to the data sheets, the excess is swept off after 24 hours.

How to calculate the order quantity

  1. Measure the area in m².
  2. Write down the system coat by coat: primer, intermediate coat if any, main coating and topcoat.
  3. For each coat, calculate area × data-sheet consumption.
  4. Add a waste allowance. The data sheets give no percentage for this; the allowance depends on the condition of the floor and the site conditions. Material that cannot be applied within the pot life is also waste; for DEMCO EPOX 2004 SELF/FAST the pot life is 13–20 minutes at 23 °C.
  5. Round the total up to whole kits: two-component products come in kits (DEMCO EPOX 2000 SELF: 20 kg, A 16 kg + B 4 kg), and the data sheets require all of component B to be poured into component A.

Example: suppose 2 mm of DEMCO EPOX 2000 SELF is to be applied over DEMCO EPOX 100 PR on a 500 m² area. The primer needs 500 × 0.350–0.500 ≈ 175–250 kg; with the 18 kg kit, 175 ÷ 18 and 250 ÷ 18 rounded up give ≈10–14 kits. The coating needs 500 × 3.2 ≈ 1,600 kg, or ≈80 kits of 20 kg. The waste allowance is added on top of these quantities.

Frequently asked questions

How many m² does 1 kg of epoxy primer cover?

The data-sheet consumption of DEMCO EPOX 100 PR is 0.350–0.500 kg/m² per coat, so 1 kg primes ≈2.0–2.9 m². The actual value depends on how absorbent the concrete is.

How many kg per m² does a 2 mm self-leveling floor need?

DEMCO EPOX 2000 SELF needs 1.6 kg/m² per 1 mm, so 2 mm calls for 1.6 × 2 ≈ 3.2 kg/m² of coating. Add 0.350–0.500 kg/m² of DEMCO EPOX 100 PR primer underneath, in one coat.

How many m² does a 20 kg kit cover?

It depends on the product and the thickness. 20 kg of DEMCO EPOX 2000 SELF covers 20 ÷ 1.6 ≈ 12.5 m² at 1 mm and 20 ÷ 3.2 ≈ 6.3 m² at 2 mm. 20 kg of DEMCO EPOX 150 TOP COAT covers between 20 ÷ 0.400 ≈ 50.0 m² and 20 ÷ 0.350 ≈ 57.1 m² in one coat.

Is consumption calculated differently for polyurethane coatings?

No, the same logic applies. DEMCO PUR 360 SELF needs 1.6–1.7 kg/m² per 1 mm. DEMCO PUR 303 CONCRETE SL 20 UB/WB, with a density of 2.10 ± 0.10 g/cm³, needs ~2.1 kg/m² per 1 mm, which gives 2.1 × 6 ≈ 12.6 kg/m² at 6 mm.

How much extra material should I order?

DEMCO data sheets give no percentage for waste. The allowance depends on the absorbency of the concrete, the roughness of the surface, the layout of the area and the site conditions. Add this allowance to the calculated quantity and round the total up to whole kits.
