Description

Demco® Carbon Laminate is a range of prefabricated carbon fiber reinforced polymer plates used to increase the flexural strength and stiffness of reinforced concrete, steel and timber structural elements.

Advantages

  • The Demco® Carbon Laminate system can be applied much more easily and quickly than traditional strengthening methods such as steel or reinforced concrete jacketing.
  • Thanks to their high modulus of elasticity, they reduce deflections caused by service loads in slabs and beams.
  • They increase load-bearing capacity (for new loads resulting from a change in the building's intended use).
  • Being very lightweight, they do not add extra load to the structure.
  • Strengthening applications do not require the structure to be vacated; with partial rearrangements, strengthening work can be carried out while the building remains in use.
  • They have very high tensile strengths (even higher than the steels used in the prestressed concrete industry).

Application Areas

Demco® Carbon Laminate is suitable for professional users only.

Demco® Carbon Laminate systems are prefabricated carbon fiber reinforced polymer plates (laminates) that can be used on many different structural elements. These systems can be used for the following purposes:

  • To increase the flexural strength and rigidity of beams, slabs and steel/timber members.
  • Increasing the flexural strength of slabs carrying heavy loads (machinery, racks, etc.).
  • Increasing the rigidity of deflecting beams and slabs.
  • Compensating for loss of cross-section caused by service shafts, stairwells, etc.
  • Increasing the flexural capacity of beams and slabs in structures whose use or service loads have changed.
  • Withstanding stresses caused by vibrations from machines mounted on reinforced concrete slabs.

Surface Preparation and Application

Surface preparation:

  • Before starting the application, the carbon fiber reinforced polymer plates should be cut to the dimensions specified in the project.
  • The surfaces of the plates must be cleaned of foreign matter such as oil, dirt and grease using thinner or similar solvents.

Application:

  • Demco® 933 adhesive must be applied with a spatula to the smooth surfaces of the pre-prepared carbon fiber plates at a thickness of 1-1,5 mm.
  • Likewise, Demco® 933 adhesive must be applied to the primed surfaces with a spatula.
  • Then, the carbon fiber reinforced polymer plates, with adhesive applied to their backs, must be fixed in place in line with their alignment, slightly tensioned and without bulging.
  • Finally, the carbon plates must be pressed on with a roller in the direction of the fibers so that no voids remain between them and the concrete surface.
  • In areas exposed to sunlight, the plates must be covered with suitable cement-based repair mortars no later than 7 days after application.
  • If fire resistance is required, the plates must be covered with special fire-resistant mortars to a suitable thickness.

Application Conditions

  • Protective equipment such as gloves and goggles must be worn during application.
  • Demco® Carbon Laminate must not be handled with bare hands.
  • In special cases (different weather conditions, different application areas, etc.), if any application not described in the data sheet is to be carried out, Demmerg Construction Chemicals Technical Service should be consulted.

Storage and Shelf Life
